About this artwork

This poster comes from the artist famed for creating the notorious First World War recruitment poster Your Country Needs You (1914), featuring Lord Kitchener. Alfred Leete, the artist in question, also designed ads for brands like Guinness and Bovril, along with commissioning posters for the London Underground. Leete, famous for his humorous illustrations, uses a comedic angle here, depicting the public being 'enticed' by the fast services of the Underground, much to the envy of bus and taxi riders. The London Underground symbol, also known as the roundel, is portrayed as a vortex, drawing people towards it. It was published by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London in 1927. This print is an authentic reproduction from the historic poster archive housed in the London Transport Museum. Every purchase contributes to the museum's operations.

About the artist

Born in Thorpe Achurch, Northamptonshire in 1882, self-made artist Alfred Ambrose Chew Leete found his passion for art as an apprentice surveyor in Bristol. His first paid drawing was published in 1897 by the Daily Graphic, paving his way to frequent contributions to Bristol Magpie. Moving to London in 1899, he became a printer's artist before turning independent in 1905. His work, often comedic illustrations and ads, appeared in many publications. Leete is best known for his iconic World War I recruitment poster featuring Lord Kitchener. He died in 1933.
