About this artwork

Alfred Sisley, a French artist with English roots, played a crucial role in the inaugural 1874 Impressionist exhibition. His painting portrays a snapshot of the Seine river on the southwestern outskirts of Paris. A scene of wood being offloaded from a river barge unfolds, as a passenger ferry sails past. The artwork's allure lies in the wonderfully abrupt and rough brushstrokes that lend an air of immediacy to the piece. About the artist

Alfred Sisley (30 October 1839 – 29 January 1899) was a French Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citisenship. He was influenced by the Impressionist style of Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, and was a member of the Impressionist group. Sisley's early works were mostly urban scenes, but he later turned to landscapes of the Seine and the Loing river. He was known for his ability to capture the effects of light and atmosphere in his paintings. Sisley was married to Eugénie Lesouezec, with whom he had two daughters.
