About this artwork

From Upright Tokaido - Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' is a piece of artwork created by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, famous for his focus on Ukiyo-e, a specific style of Japanese art. This art form involves a cooperative process where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher all play significant roles in completing the work. Hiroshige, after his inaugural journey along the Tokaido road in 1832, created this series of woodcuts. This famous road connects the capital city, Edo, with the royal city of Kyoto.
