About this artwork

This artwork is one of twelve remaining pieces that Camille Pissarro created while residing in London from 1870-1871 during the Franco-Prussian war. Pissarro painted The Avenue, previously a broad street in Sydenham, an upscale suburb near Crystal Palace. To depict this scene of spring, Pissarro primarily utilised colours blended with white paint to achieve a uniform light tonality. The conventional use of perspective and the charming landscape may have been included to cater to potential buyers who may be hesitant about the artist's impressionistic style. This reproduction is colour coordinated with the original and has received approval from the National Gallery. Each purchased item aids the museum's work.

About the artist

Camille Pissarro (10 July 1830 – 13 November 1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. He was a key figure in the development of both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and was one of the first artists to embrace the use of plein-air painting. Pissarro was also a teacher to many of the great artists of the early 20th century, including Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, and Paul Gauguin. He was also a close friend of Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir.
