About this artwork

Caspar David Friedrich, a German landscape artist, created 'The Wanderer Above The Sea Of Clouds' back in 1818. This oil painting is often seen as a cornerstone piece of the Romantic Era. The figure in the painting, a young man staring into the mist from the edge of a cliff, is believed to be a self-portrait of the artist. Friedrich's purpose with this piece is to evoke a sense of introspection, a theme that's demonstrated through the wanderer's contemplation of the foggy expanse. This concept is inspired by Immanuel Kant’s philosophical work, ‘Theory of the Self’.

About the artist

Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, born in 1774 in Greifswald. He is best known for his contemplative landscapes, featuring contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees, and Gothic ruins. His work is characterised by a reverence for nature and a spiritual element. Friedrich's paintings often evoke a sense of loneliness and contemplation. He was a major influence on the later Romantic movement in Germany.
