About the artist

Born in Gadsden, Alabama, on August 18, 1905, Charles Clyde Ebbets initiated his photographic journey at eight with a Kodak Brownie. After leaving school amid a nationwide struggle in the 1920s, he relocated to Montgomery and joined a city newspaper. There, his aspiration of becoming a professional photographer started to take shape. Simultaneously an adventurer, he mastered his craft while venturing throughout the southeast, capturing unique action, aerial and wildlife shots.

By the early 1930s, his remarkable work garnered attention, leading to a contract in 1932 with the burgeoning Rockefeller Center. Tasked with publicizing the immense construction project amid post-depression difficulties, he did just that, producing a series of celebrated images. Among them, his iconic shot of workmen lunching on a beam high above Manhattan, an enduring symbol of ordinary men in extraordinary situations, sealed his place in the annals of 20th-century American photography.
