About this artwork

Scottish architect, designer, and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh is recognised as a key figure in Modern Style, an Art Nouveau movement unique to the UK. Back in 1920, he was asked to create designs for a block of studio flats in Chelsea, a site enclosed by Oakley Street, Glebe Place, and Upper Cheyne Walk. Even though the designs didn't get the green light, this delightful sketch gives us a glimpse of one of the blocks Mackintosh had in mind, with the garden elevation of a studio displayed on the right.
