About this artwork

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a well known Scottish architect, artist, and designer who played a significant role in the Modern Style Art Nouveau movement, which was unique to Great Britain. Mackintosh, together with his wife, lived in the south of France for four years. During this time, he dedicated his efforts to capturing the local scenery in his paintings. One of his prominent works, 'The Road through the Rocks', showcases the Fort Mailly, located on the fringe of Port Vendres. In this piece, Mackintosh paid particular attention to the dynamic mass surrounding the fort.
