About this artwork

Charles Rennie Mackintosh came from Scotland and was an architect, designer, and artist. He played a key role in the Modern Style movement, a unique form of Art Nouveau that took root in Great Britain. In 1900, Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret Macdonald, were hired to create designs for the Ladies Luncheon Room at Miss Cranston’s Ingram Street Tea Room in Glasgow. Among Mackintosh's designs was 'The Wassail', a tri-panel oil painting on gesso. This splendid piece was showcased alongside Macdonald’s creation, 'The May Queen'.

About the artist

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. He was a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement and a major influence on European design. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He was a pioneer of modernism and his work was inspired by Japanese art and the natural forms of Scotland. He was a successful architect and designer, creating iconic buildings and furniture. He was also a talented watercolourist and his works are held in many public collections.
