About this artwork

Charlie Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish artist, architect, and designer, was a key player in the Modern Style, a branch of Art Nouveau unique to the UK. As he grew older, he became less interested in architecture and more focused on painting. He created a lot of flower studies, with 'Yellow Tulips' being one of them, which he created in his Chelsea, London studio. The background of the painting is so meticulously painted that it competes with the flowers for our attention.

About the artist

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. He was a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement and a major influence on European design. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He was a pioneer of modernism and his work was inspired by Japanese art and the natural forms of Scotland. He was a successful architect and designer, creating iconic buildings and furniture. He was also a talented watercolourist and his works are held in many public collections.
