About this artwork

This artwork draws inspiration from Claude Monet's 1869 sketch of La Grenouillere. This was a fashionable weekend getaway situated slightly west of Paris. Instead of creating a detailed rendition, Monet used swift, sweeping brush strokes for a more abstract representation. This happens to be one of the earliest instances of impressionist style in painting. The print stays true to the original colours and has the National Gallery's approval. About the artist

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French Impressionist painter who was a key figure in the development of the art movement. He was inspired by the Barbizon school and the works of Eugene Boudin, and was a leader in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Monet was a prolific artist, producing over 2,500 paintings in his lifetime. He was also a passionate gardener, and his garden at Giverny was the inspiration for many of his works. Monet was a founding member of the Impressionist group, and his works are among the most recognizable in the world.
