About this artwork

When Claude Monet was just in his early twenties, he created this painting that gives us a view across the breakwaters towards La Heve's headland, located near Sainte-Adresse on the coast of Normandy. The sharp detailing of pebbles on the vacant beach and the broad, flat brush strokes that frame the boat on the horizon suggest the future path that Monet would take as an impressionist artist. This print has been colour matched to the original and has received approval from the National Gallery. Every sale of this print contributes to the work of the museum.

About the artist

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French Impressionist painter who was a key figure in the development of the art movement. He was inspired by the Barbizon school and the works of Eugene Boudin, and was a leader in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Monet was a prolific artist, producing over 2,500 paintings in his lifetime. He was also a passionate gardener, and his garden at Giverny was the inspiration for many of his works. Monet was a founding member of the Impressionist group, and his works are among the most recognizable in the world.
