About this artwork

Claude Monet, a French artist from the late 1800s, was a major player in the Impressionist art scene. In 1875, while living in Argenteuil, a community situated just outside of Paris, Monet created 'Train in the Snow or The Locomotive'. Unlike many Impressionist works that highlight natural scenes, this piece illustrates a particular event. However, Monet still employed Impressionist techniques, utilizing small brush strokes to create texture for the wooden fence and train smoke, thereby giving an impressionist portrayal of the subject.
