About this artwork

Wilding first had the chance to photograph the Queen when she was just a kid in 1937, during her father King George VI's crowning ceremony. She went on to capture the Queen's image on many meaningful occasions. When the Queen acceded to the throne and got crowned in 1952, she sat for Wilding fifty-nine different times, rocking evening dresses designed by Norman Hartnell. The top photos were distributed to every embassy around the globe, and they became the foundation for images on money and graced millions of stamps.Dorothy Frances Edith Wilding, who lived from 1893 to 1976, was a pro portrait photographer from Gloucester, England. She managed to open up successful studios in both London and New York. She's famous for her portraits of the British Royal Family, a number of which were used on postage stamps. Plus, she's particularly recognised for her photo shoots of actors and celebrities that blended posh glamour with a modern, elegant style.

About the artist

Dorothy Wilding, apprenticed to Marian Neilson, started her photography career. As the Official Royal Photographer for the 1937 Coronation, she became the first woman appointed to the role. In that year, she opened a second studio in New York. Notably, Wilding captured the new Queen in striking simplicity, employing plain black or white backdrops to direct focus onto the subject. She photographed The Queen in fifty-nine shots, showcasing various gowns by Norman Hartnell and jewelry such as the Diamond Diadem and the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. In 1958, she published her autobiography, "In Pursuit of Perfection." Her sister, Mrs. Susan Morton, presented her archives to the National Portrait Gallery in 1976, forming the foundation for a significant retrospective exhibition and catalog titled "The Pursuit of Perfection" in 1991.
