About this artwork

Emile Cardinaux, a Swiss artist, was hired to create a collection of posters promoting the amenities at the Palace Hotel in St Moritz. This swanky mountain resort town is nestled in Switzerland's Engadin valley. In this poster, Emile illustrates a scene of an alpine golf round at the hotel, complete with a picnic going on. Her intriguing illustration beautifully encapsulates the charm and sophistication across various seasons at the hotel.

About the artist

Emil Cardinaux was a Swiss painter and poster artist, He was born in 1877 and died in 1936. He enrolled in drawing lessons at the Bern art school under Paul Volmar. In 1898, he relocated to Munich and dedicated himself to becoming a full-time artist.

Cardinaux belonged to the well known "Bern School," led by Ferdinand Hodler. This artistic movement also included notable figures such as Traugott Senn, Adolf Tièche, Eduard Boss, Ernst Linck, Emil Prochaska, and Max Eugen Brack. Cardinaux showcased his diverse skills through book illustrations, monochromatic cards, printed materials, caricatures, and fascinating landscapes displayed on canvas, walls, and glass. However, his fame was mainly due to over 130 poster artworks.
