About this artwork

Back in the late 1920s, the Empire Marketing Board commissioned a series of posters. These visuals were designed to encourage intra-empire trade and depict a picture-perfect snapshot of life in the British Empire's territories and colonies. Today, the original copies of these posters are safely stored in The National Archives, UK.

About the artist

Fred Taylor, a painter and poster designer, lived from 1875 to 1963. He was born and resided in London, and had the chance to study at Paris's Académie Julian, Goldsmiths’ College School of Art and in Italy, thanks to a gold medal and a travelling scholarship he'd won. He dedicated a significant amount of his work to railway and shipping companies and served as a camouflage artist during the second World War. In 1924, he joined the Art Workers’ Guild.

One of the highlights of his career was being hired by the railways to showcase the architectural wonders of regional cities. He was lucky enough to be asked by the Royal Mail Steamship Company to journey to South America and document his experiences. Besides creating posters, he designed murals for the Underwriters’ Room at Lloyds and the Red Lacquer Room at Austin Reed. His work was showcased at the Royal Academy, various London art societies and the Paris Salon.
