About this artwork

Frederick Henry Evans was a buddy and supporter of Beardsley, and he played a crucial role in securing some of Beardsley's initial gigs for book illustration. At the time this picture of Beardsley was captured, he was battling tuberculosis and was extremely frail. This photo exhibits his elongated, slender fingers and a profile that Oscar Wilde referred to as resembling 'a silver hatchet'. Beardsley was quite fond of this portrait and in 1894 penned a note to Evans saying, 'I reckon the photos are terrific; they couldn't be any better.' This print is accurately colour balanced to match the original, as approved by the National Portrait Gallery. Every time someone makes a purchase, it helps support the museum's work.

About the artist

Frederick Henry Evans (1853-1943). Born in London.

He began his professional life running a bookshop in Cheapside, frequented by the likes of Bernard Shaw and Aubrey Beardsley. However, in 1896, he gave up his bookselling life to pursue a career in photography. His specialty was architectural photography, taking long exposed shots of English cathedrals to capture the interplay of light and shadow. In 1894, he joined The Linked Ring and advocated for thematic arrangement in photo exhibits. By 1914, his focus had shifted away from photography entirely.
