About this artwork

In 1893, a well-known photography firm, Gillman & Co, snapped a memorable picture of the famous Irish poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde, alongside his partner Lord Alfred Douglas. Besides his unforgettable novels and plays, Wilde's legacy is also marked by his criminal conviction for consensual homosexual acts. Today, he is celebrated as a prominent LGBTQ+ figure. This print is expertly color coordinated with the original and has received approval from the National Portrait Gallery. Each purchase aids the museum's efforts.

About the artist

Starting out as Oxfordshire wigmakers in 1856, Charles Gillman saw potential in the budding world of photography. In 1840, he founded the Gillman & Co. photography studio which he ran from 1882 until 1910. Later, the firm welcomed another photographer, James Soame, Jr., into its ranks. To this day, the business continues under the name Gillman & Soame. They've come a long way since their humble beginnings, even earning recognition from Queen Victoria within a decade of their formation.
