About the artist

Born on 25 July 1873 in Ixelles and died on 8 September 1922 in Brussels, Henri Meunier, also known as Henri Georges Jean Isidore Meunier, was a prominent figure in the Belgian Art Nouveau movement. His remarkable skills spanned across various forms of art such as lithography, etching, illustration, bookbinding and poster designing, all during the height of the Belle Époque.

The artistic talent in Henri Meunier's bloodline ran deep; he was the son of Jean-Baptiste Meunier, a seasoned etcher, and the nephew of well known sculptor Constantin Meunier. Henri's journey into the world of art began under the guidance of his father in his personal engraving workshop. His artistic prowess was further shaped at the academy in Ixelles, where he expanded his skills and ventured into other forms of artistic expression like printmaking, poster designing, graphic reporting and bookbinding.

Meunier's distinctive style was greatly influenced by Japanese prints. He often incorporated flat colours and bold outlines in his works, creating powerful and striking images.
