His distinguished career spanned several industries, including travel, music, and recruitment. Initially trained as a lawyer, Tavin founded a prosperous travel agency chain. He then relocated to Germany, managing a top jazz singer. After tying the knot with Janou Pakter, Tavin played a key role in launching her triumphant global executive search firm 24 years ago.

In 1994, Tavin and Pakter introduced nonstock, a globally well known photography collection. This high-end offering presented a fresh alternative to traditional stock agencies, earning notable respect for its unique, compelling, and innovative imagery. Tavin also held the position of co-president at Glasshouse Images.

His advocacy extended beyond photography, reaching the photographers themselves. In recognition of his contributions, Tavin received the esteemed Picture Professional award of the year in 2008 from the American Society of Pictures Professionals (ASPP).
