About this artwork

John Constable is the artist behind this remarkable painting, which portrays a scenic view of Bowleaze Cove, located in Dorset, Southwest England. During his honeymoon in 1816, Constable spent his time in a quaint village near the Cove, and was inspired to create three paintings from this stunning view.In this particular painting, Constable beautifully captures the waves lapping on the beach by using thick strokes of grey and white paint. This palette perfectly mirrors the colour of the clouds in the scene. About the artist

John Constable , 1776-1837, was an English Romantic painter known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside. He was a major influence in the development of the English landscape school and was one of the first painters to depict nature realistically. Constable was born in Suffolk and studied at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1829. Constable's works are held in many public collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
