About the artist

John Dominis, a Los Angeles native born in 1921, was a cinematography student at USC until he joined the Air Force in 1943. Post World War II, he made a living as a freelance photographer, contributing to national magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers and LIFE. His willingness to report on the Korean War in 1950 landed him a staff position.

Throughout his career, Dominis documented significant events in Asia, including the 1958 Laotian conflict, Indonesian Revolution, Japanese riots, and was among the pioneering photographers of the Vietnam War.

In the following 20+ years, his work took him worldwide, from Southeast Asia and the American Southwest to Africa, Europe, Mexico and New York City. His portfolio includes covering six Olympic Games, including the iconic Black Power salute photo from the 1968 Mexico City Summer Games. He also captured memorable images from Woodstock, and created well known photo essays on celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen.

John Dominis died on December 30, 2013.
