About the artist
At twenty, he journeyed to Stockholm to hone his artistic skills at the prestigious Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Edvard Perséus. From 1880-1882, he independently pursued further studies in France, and also visited museums in Antwerp and Brussels. Karl was heavily influenced by Impressionism, which he encountered during the Seventh Exhibition in Paris in 1882.
His talent won him a spot at the Salon, where two of his pieces were showcased. Following a brief stay in Normandy, Karl returned to Sweden and continued his work until 1886. In 1885, he joined 85 other Swedish artists, dubbed the 'Opponents', advocating for an overhaul of the art education, exhibition activities, and artist support provided by the Royal Academy of Arts.
