About this artwork
In 1781, Maria Cosway, an artist of Italian and English descent, was hired by Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire, to create a portrait of her. But there was a twist - she was to be portrayed not just as herself, but as Cynthia from the classic English epic poem 'The Faerie Queen'. This poem, authored by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to none other than Queen Elizabeth I, delved into the lives of the Queen's courtiers in a fantastical fairy realm, using this as a vehicle to explore the concept of virtue. Cynthia was not just any character - she was a moon goddess and one of the heroes of the tale. This print is a spot-on replication of the original, which is part of the Devonshire Collection housed in Chatsworth House. Each purchase goes towards maintaining this historical archive.
