About this artwork

Mary Koop creatively contrasts an array of vibrant umbrellas advancing towards a shop entrance to fascinate the viewer's gaze. The umbrella was a frequent feature in various London Underground posters, particularly during the 1920s. Its appealing symmetry was a perfect match for the prominent geometric style of that era. Moreover, it was an appropriate symbolic representation of the Underground as a shelter from the characteristic English weather. In this context, the emphasis on chic patterns draws the attention of female passengers, enticing them to use the Tube.This poster was ordered by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London to encourage commuting to the summer sales of 1925. This print is a true recreation from the historical poster archive located at the London Transport Museum. Every purchase contributes to the museum's work.

About the artist

Little information is available about Mary Koop, the creative mind behind the 1925 masterpiece, 'Summer Sales Quickly Reached'. Her education was pursued at the London School of Art and the Croydon School of Art.

In 2012, a print of Koop's 'torrent of umbrellas', another acclaimed work of hers, fetched almost £9,000 at an auction. This popular artwork has been extensively reproduced and features on a variety of items, including actual umbrellas and postage stamps.
