About this artwork

'Gratitude from the Navy' is an inspirational poster created by Pat Keely. It features a ship being launched on a slipway with a prominent union flag in the front and towering cranes enveloping the scene. This poster was created during World War Two by the naval authority as a token of appreciation to the public for their unwavering support. The colour palette of this print is carefully replicated to match the original as approved by the Imperial War Museum. Every sale of this print contributes to the museum's operations.

About the artist

Born in 1901 and passing away in 1970, Patrick Cokayne Keely, more commonly known as Pat Keely, was an artist who was largely self-taught. Before the Second World War, Keely had already made a name for himself in the art world. He was particularly known for his Art Deco style, strongly present in his posters for the Southern Railway.

Keely's work was not just limited to railway posters, he also designed for London Transport, the Post Office, and British Aluminium Co. Additionally, during wartime, he lent his artistic skills to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, creating impactful accident prevention posters such as 'Lookout in the Blackout'.

He was associated with the Society of Industrial Artists and Artistes Graphiques Internationales. A selection of his work is preserved in the National Archives, London.
