About this artwork

The poster 'Women of Britain - Come into the Factories' was a pivotal part of the initiative to mobilise British women into the workforce during World War II. The depiction of a cheerful woman, arms raised high, with a parade of military aircraft streaking across the sky above her, is reminiscent of the quintessential Soviet propaganda images. This print is meticulously color matched to its original counterpart and has received the seal of approval from the Imperial War Museum. Each purchase goes a long way in supporting the museum's operations.

About the artist

Born on December 25, 1909, Philip Zec was a well known British political cartoonist and editor, the fourth among eleven children of Russian immigrant parents, Simon Zecanovsky and Leah Oistrakh. His lineage traces back to a rabbi grandfather and parents who sought refuge in England from tsarist persecution.

Zec's educational journey began at Stanhope Elementary School, from where he transitioned to St Martin's School of Art on a scholarship at thirteen. Initially working in advertising, Zec pivoted to political cartooning due to his disdain for the emergence of fascism. Intriguingly, he was listed among individuals the Nazis intended to arrest in the event of a British invasion during World War II.

Zec's contribution to the Daily Mirror, especially his VE-day cartoon, received significant recognition. This artwork, showing a wounded soldier passing on a victory laurel symbolizing European peace, carried a profound message: "Here you are. Don't lose it again!". It was instrumental in the Labour Party's 1945 general election campaign. Post-war, Zec ascended to directorship at the Daily Mirror, leading the strip-cartoon department.
