About this artwork

Pieter Bruegel The Elder was a pivotal figure in the Dutch Renaissance art scene. His unique portrayals of landscapes and everyday rural life marked a distinct shift away from the religious themes that had previously been the mainstay of European art. The section titled 'Children Playing on the Frozen River' is actually an excerpt from a larger painting that Bruegel created, known as ‘The Census at Bethlehem.’ This painting portrays a Flemish village in the aftermath of the winter of 1565, which was one of the most severe winters recorded.

About the artist

Pieter Bruegel The Elder (1525-1569) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was a pioneer of genre painting and his style was a precursor to the Baroque. He was influenced by the Italian Renaissance and the work of Hieronymus Bosch. Bruegel was a devout Catholic and his works often contained moral and religious messages. He was also a skilled draughtsman and engraver.
