About this artwork

The future Duke of Wellington was captured in this early portrait back in 1804 when he was stationed in India. The painting shows him in his major-general's uniform, a time when his well known victories were yet to come. Although he had been awarded the Order of the Bath in August 1804, he is not pictured wearing it. It didn't arrive from England until March 1805, and it's said a friend pinned it on him while he was sleeping. During this period, the acclaimed author Maria Edgeworth described him as 'handsome, very brown … (with) a hooked nose'. Between 1804 and 1806, Robert Home created fourteen portraits of Wellington, including one for his commanding admiral and one for the East India Company. This print's colours are precisely matched to the original and received the National Portrait Gallery's stamp of approval. Every purchase made contributes to the museum's work.

About the artist

Born in Hull, UK, Robert Home (1752-1834) was the offspring of a distinguished military surgeon. In 1766, he began training under Angelica Kauffman, a family lodger, before joining the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. His quest for further education took him to Rome in 1773, where he stayed until 1777. He plied his trade in Dublin and London from 1783 to 1789, prior to embarking for India in 1790. In South India, he was permitted to follow Lord Cornwallis's forces during the Third Anglo-Mysore War on February 5, 1791.

Home created several well known works in South India, including "The Hostage Princes leaving home with the Vakil, Ghulam Ali" and "Lord Cornwallis Receiving Tipu Sahib's Sons." In November 1792, he connected with artists Thomas Daniell and William Daniell, drawing inspiration to further paint landscapes. By 1795, he was in Calcutta, expanding his portfolio and making substantial contributions to the local art society. He moved to Lucknow in 1814, becoming court painter for Nawab Ghazi-ud-Din Haider, before journeying to Kanpur in 1827. He died in 1834.
