About the artist

Born in South London in 1913, Thurston Hopkins, also known as "Godfrey," first trained as an illustrator at Brighton College of Art. He soon discovered photography was more lucrative and turned into a full-time photojournalist. During the 1940s, he served in the RAF Photographic Unit, documenting the war in Italy and the Middle East and continued to capture European life post-war.

Hopkins spent a significant part of his career with Picture Post, highlighting everyday post-war British life from 1950 onwards. He was known for advocating a strong connection between the writer and the photographer. Apparently he was a quietly sardonic, curious yet courteous individual. He worked for a decade in his own advertising studio in West London after Picture Post ceased operations. His photograph, "La Dolce Vita," gained wide popularity as a postcard, poster, and calendar image. Hopkins lived until the age of 101, passing away in 2014.
