About the artist

Tom Eckersley (1914–97), a Lancashire-born artist, is generally celebrated as one of Britain's finest mid-20th-century graphic designers. His vibrant, unique style incorporated bold colours and sleek shapes. After studying at Salford Art School in Manchester, he made his move to London in 1934, launching a long, distinguished career that spanned six decades.

In the 1930s, as a commercial art student, Eckersley made his mark as a leading poster artist, creating numerous works for Shell-Mex and over 80 posters for London Transport, often alongside artist Eric Lombers. His partnership with London Transport would endure for more than half a century.

Eckersley's contributions during WWII included designing maps for the RAF. His art stood alongside that of F.H.K. Henrion, Abram Games, and Hans Schleger in defining the Home Front aesthetic. After the war he continued his poster design work. In 1954, Eckersley joined London College of Printing's teaching staff, later leading the department. He played a crucial role in establishing Britain's first undergraduate graphic design courses and was honoured as a Royal Designer to Industry in 1961.
