About this artwork

Tove Jansson was a Finnish author, artist, and illustrator who spoke Swedish. She's the creative mind behind the 'Moomin' books, a series that introduces us to a unique family of round, white characters with a wild imagination. If you notice, Moomins have big snouts that make them look like hippos. But, interestingly enough, they're actually known as trolls. One image that stands out features Moomintroll snuggling up to Snorkmaiden, who happens to be his best friend and girlfriend.

About the artist

Tove Jansson, a Swedish-speaking Finnish author, painter, and illustrator, is well known for her 'Moomin' book series featuring round, white characters with large snouts, akin to hippos but referred to as trolls. Growing up, her father Viktor's conservative views clashed with Tove's more liberal mindset. Still, she admired his work and the artistic environment shaped her character. At 15, Tove journeyed to Sweden to attend the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, followed by internships at various European art schools.

Upon her return, she leveraged her experience, gained early by collaborating with a popular children's magazine, to illustrate books and create caricatures for different clients. Her Moomin series, popular mid-20th century, elevated her to fame, with several spin-off illustrated books, comics, a play, and a musical libretto adding to her popularity. The attention became overwhelming and so she purchased an island in the Gulf of Finland for privacy. Despite her literary success, Tove considered herself an artist first and foremost.
