About this artwork

When Vincent Van Gogh was residing in Arles, a quaint city in the south of France, he created a number of paintings and sketches that featured the Langlois Bridge. This tiny drawbridge, spanning over the Bouc canal, reminded him of his native Netherlands. While working on 'Bridge at Arles (Pont de Langlois) 1888', Van Gogh tapped into his understanding of colour theory. He experimented with different shades of coloured wool before he put brush to canvas. For example, he chose hues of yellow for the drawbridge to create a striking contrast with the blue water below.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
