About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, was known for his scope of creations from scenic landscapes to self-portraits, all marked by vibrant hues and dynamic brush strokes. In the final year of his life, he resided in Auvers, a small township located on the north-west fringes of Paris, France. During his time there, he created 'House at Auvers', a painting that showcases a dwelling set amidst the French countryside, captured in the glow of early summer. Van Gogh paid particular attention to the patchwork-style thatched roofs, constructing a flattened collage of forms to encase the house.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
