About this artwork

Vincent Van Gogh frequently featured peasant imagery in his artwork throughout his career. His fascination with this theme was influenced by the work of Realist artists like Jean-François Millet and reflected his socialist beliefs. In 'The Sower', the peasant, which takes up most of the foreground, is depicted ploughing the land - a wide gesture symbolic of the circle of life. Van Gogh also positioned the sun right behind the peasant's head, creating a halo effect, suggesting that the everyday peasant is a symbol of moral and religious righteousness.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
