About this artwork

'Wassily Kandinsky's 'Circles in a Circle' was the pioneer artwork that prominently featured circles in its theme. The dominant outer black circle prompts the observer to examine the interplay between the inner circles and the cross-cutting diagonal lines. Interestingly, this piece was created by Kandinsky during his tenure at the German art academy, Bauhaus. Here, he derived inspiration from the burgeoning Russian notion of constructivism – the belief that art should genuinely mirror the contemporary industrial world.

About the artist

Wassily Kandinsky , born on December 16, 1866 and died on December 13, 1944, was a Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited as the pioneer of abstract art and is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was a leader of the avant-garde movement Der Blaue Reiter and was a professor at the Bauhaus school of art. His works are characterised by a strong sense of colour and form, and his theories on art were highly influential. Kandinsky was also a pianist and a philosopher, and his works were heavily influenced by music and spiritualism.
