About the artist

Known for capturing the Golden Age of American jazz through his lens, William Paul Gottlieb (1917-2006) was an acclaimed American photographer and columnist. His iconic images of 1930s and 40s jazz luminaries, including luminaries like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, are among the most recognised and reproduced of the era. His portfolio brims with intimate portraits of these musicians, often taken at popular New York City jazz clubs.
