He studied photography at the University of Southern California's film school and apprenticed under graphic designer Saul Bass at the Kahn Institute of Art.\n\u003cbr\u003e \n\u003cbr\u003e From 1948 to 1954, his exhibitions showcasing photographs of jazz musicians and dancers caught the attention of Globe Photos, leading to a contract. One of his images, featuring an ecstatic female audience, was chosen by Edward Steichen for The Family of Man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, which toured globally and attracted 9 million visitors.[3][4][5] Willoughby later worked for Harper's Bazaar, where he captured the essence of art and culture through his photographs.His breakthrough came when he was commissioned by six magazines to photograph Judy Garland during the production of A Star is Born (1954). Willoughby's popularity thrived due to his talent for capturing candid moments of film stars, revealing their vulnerability and relaxation.\n\u003cbr\u003e \n\u003cbr\u003e Throughout his life, Willoughby continued to pursue photography. He resided in Ireland for 17 years, utilizing his photographic expertise to illustrate ancient Irish poetry with fascinating countryside photographs. Additionally, he authored books on photography and various subjects. In his final years, he lived in Vence, France, remaining actively engaged in his profession.
