Born in Bologna around 1581, Domenichino was a leading painter in the classical Bolognese style. He trained under Calvaert and the Carracci brothers before moving to Rome in 1602. There, he assisted Annibale Carracci in decorating the Palazzo Farnese, contributing the now-famous "Maiden with the Unicorn" fresco. Throughout the early 1600s,
Domenichino dominated the Roman art scene. He created numerous altarpieces and frescoes, including scenes depicting the life of St. Cecilia. In 1631, he relocated to Naples, where he adapted his style to the more dramatic Baroque taste. However, jealousy from local artists forced him to flee in 1634. Returning a year later, he tragically died before finishing a commission for the Naples Cathedral. Beyond frescoes and altarpieces,
Domenichino excelled in other areas. He played a key role in developing "ideal landscapes," bridging the gap between Annibale Carracci and Claude Lorrain. His exceptional drawing skills are evident in the vast collection at Windsor Castle, and he was also a talented portraitist. While his reputation soared in the 18th century, particularly for works like "The Last Communion of St. Jerome," critiques in the 19th century caused a decline in popularity. Thankfully, his artistic merit has been reevaluated in recent decades.
