Gerard Hoffnung (born 22nd March 1925, died 28th September 1959) was a well known artist and musician, recognized primarily for his comical creations. Born and bred in Germany, Hoffnung moved to London as a young boy to flee the Nazi regime. Over his subsequent twenty-year stay in England, he earned a reputation as a cartoonist, tuba virtuoso, impresario, broadcaster, and raconteur.

Post receiving his education from two art colleges, Hoffnung spent a few years teaching before joining the drawing staff of British and American publications. He later freelanced, creating a series of music-themed cartoons and providing illustrations for authors and poets.

In 1956, Hoffnung kickstarted the inaugural "Hoffnung Festivals" in London, where classical music was humorously parodied with participation from distinguished musicians. He polished his material during his time as a panelist on BBC games, where he prepared for one of his most iconic performances - his 1958 Oxford Union speech. In 1996, BBC Audiobooks featured a portrait of Hoffnung titled Hoffnung At Large by Humphrey Lyttelton, penned by Judith Liddell-King.
