Isabelle Carr (b. 1997, Dorset, England) is an artist living and working in London. Inspired by our inherent need to connect with the land, Isabelle considers the symbiotic relationship of human experience and environment throughout time, exploring recurring shapes and motifs. Also inspired by belongings and surroundings throughout history, from Prehistoric artefacts to Contemporary objects and environments.
Through drawings, paintings and imagery, Isabelle demonstrates how we collect, store and cherish possessions and spaces, and how they can provide comfort and familiarity, and act as a vehicle through which larger narratives of ritual and domesticity can be carried. Relying heavily on intuition, each work is mapped out using pencil mark making, concealing a layer of energetic movement beneath the solid stillness of paint.
The sculptural paintings contemplate themes of tension, stability, isolation and connection; sentiments Isabelle relates to her personal understanding of landscape and identity. Heavy layers of paint are carved into, gesturing a human presence.
