A protégé of Ingres, he achieved the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1832. Immersed in Italy's rich artistic tradition, his style was notably influenced by monumental decorative forms. Upon his return to Paris in 1838, he emerged as a prominent muralist, adorning significant churches like St Vincent-de-Paul (1849–53) and St Germain-des-Prés (1856–61) with grand compositions.

Embracing Ingres's principles fervently, he embodied a somewhat reserved artistic temperament. Flandrin excelled not only in portraiture but also in depicting historical and mythological narratives. His artistic lineage ran deep within his family, with both his brothers, Auguste (1804–43) and Paul (1811–1902), being pupils of Ingres, focusing primarily on portraiture and landscape respectively. Furthermore, his son, Paul-Hippolyte (1856–1921), pursued religious, historical, and genre painting.
