A member of an artistic family, this French portrait painter gained notable success during the reign of Louis XV. He specialized in depicting women in mythological or allegorical attire, sometimes even in a state of undress, transforming them into divine figures. Critics remarked on the delicate, pastel-like quality of his technique, often likening it to makeup application.
While his portraits may lack in-depth individualization, they are characterized by fluidity, liveliness, and a casual charm. However, as his career progressed, his popularity waned, and his later works betray signs of weariness. Notably, his brother, also a painter, tragically ended his life after facing expulsion from the Académie Royale.
