Karen Birchwood is an acclaimed British artist originally from Kent. She has spent a significant part of her career in textile design, specializing in pattern prints. She served as the head designer at a well known UK-based textile studio before branching out with her own.

Birchwood's work is a unique perspective of her environment, blending the use of acrylic and mixed media on varying surfaces like canvas, board, and paper. She adds texture and dimension to her pieces with collages, working intuitively from a painting's inception. Birchwood aims to achieve a balance in the vibrancy of colours and form. She employs unconventional techniques, such as using rags instead of brushes, erasing entire sections, and revealing underlying layers to perfect the composition.

Drawn to the vivid hues and breathtaking landscapes of Kent, Birchwood moved there to fulfill her painting aspirations. She captures elements that catch her eye with her surroundings serving as her muse.
