Originally from Amsterdam, Hobbema had the privilege of being the lone registered apprentice of Jacob van Ruisdael, another notable painter of the time. In terms of style, Hobbema's artworks show a strong resemblance to Ruisdael’s work, however, Hobbema's work was typically more vibrant and limited in scope. His preferred themes were consistently watermills and trees surrounding a pond, which he painted repetitively.

In 1668, Hobbema took a job at the Amsterdam customs and excise department, where his role was overseeing the weighing and measuring of imported wine. Post this, his painting endeavors were mostly pursued in his free hours. His most celebrated piece, The Avenue at Middelharnis, was created in 1689 and is regarded as the closing masterpiece of the golden era of Dutch landscapes. Hobbema has been a much-admired artist in England, with his distinctive influence evident in Gainsborough's early landscapes. Furthermore, his work is prominently featured in English art collections.

Framed Dutch & Flemish Classics art print (32 x 40 cm) by Meindert Hobbema.

Buy this print framed for £160.

Buy this print unframed for £50.

Framed Size is 32 x 40 cm.

Other print sizes and frame styles are available.

To buy, or to see more size and frame options, select 'Choose frame'..

About this artwork

In 'The Avenue at Middelharnis', Meindert Hobbema masterfully uses the trees on either side of the painting to guide the viewer's eyes towards the center of the piece. Additionally, our attention is subtly drawn to the landscape on the side, thanks to the trail and the firm horizontal lines of the paths and fields on the left. This painting's composition has had a significant impact on subsequent artists like Van Gogh, who replicated its effects in numerous paintings after viewing it at the National Gallery. The print is color-accurate to the original and has the National Gallery's stamp of approval.
