Well known for his role as a premier designer of the 19th century, William Morris (1834–1896) was also a passionate polymath, frequently at odds with mainstream perspectives. As an influential figure in the Arts & Crafts Movement, his advocacy for handmade production contrasted sharply with the Victorian focus on industrial 'progress'. His advice was simple: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."
In 1861, he established Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. with his partners, which later restructured as Morris & Co. Despite initial hurdles, the firm flourished, producing a wide array of items from furniture to tapestry, and stained glass to wallpaper, some of these designs are still sold today. Rejecting the idea of fine art, Morris founded his company on a medieval guild-like ideal, where the artisan both designed and executed the work. He wanted his art to be accessible for all, but his aspiration not feasible as his handcreated goods were only within reach of the affluent. His promotion of manual skill and universal craftsmanship therefore failed to reconcile with the reality contemporary machine production.
