About this artwork

Albert Moore was a well known British artist, famed for his portrayals of sensual female characters juxtaposed with the lavishness of the ancient world. In 1887, he created 'Midsummer', an oil painting on canvas influenced by May Day, a celebration of spring occurring on the first Monday of May. The artwork features two women crowning the May Queen, the young girl who typically leads the parade for the day's festivities.
