About this artwork

Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist artist hailing from Britain but spent the majority of his life in France. He was one of the most dedicated artists who painted his landscapes en Plein Air (outdoors). Sisley created a number of paintings depicting the floods in his hometown, Port-Marly, a quaint village situated on the River Seine, just on the outskirts of Paris. Instead of painting a dramatic scene, the water in his painting is peaceful and there isn't much activity. Sisley was truly fascinated by the visual impact of water-logged streets and dense rain clouds.
