About this artwork

Hailing from Scotland, Charles Rennie Mackintosh was an architect, designer, and artist who was pivotal in the development of the Modern Style, a unique spin on the Art Nouveau movement that emerged from Great Britain. In 1903, Mackintosh was tasked with the responsibility of designing both the interior and exterior of The Willow Tearooms in Glasgow. He ingeniously curated a variety of spaces within the pre-existing structure, each with its own specific function and decorative flair. He also designed a fresh external facade. The artwork here is one of Mackintosh's initial concepts for the mural decoration on the tearooms' first floor.
