About the artist
Colin William Moss, a socialist artist proud of his working-class roots, was born in Ipswich above the family shop. Raised by relatives in Devonport near Plymouth after his father's death in World War I, Moss studied at the Plymouth Art School and later the Royal College of Art. During World War II, he served as a camouflage officer before joining the Life Guards in the Middle East. Moss's military sketches inspired powerful paintings, and he taught at Ipswich School of Art until 1979. He co-founded art groups and studied under Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg.
